First Pre-Olympics
Thursday August 17th 2006, Author: Toby Heppell, Location: United Kingdom
Dinghy sailing’s elite are gathering in China this week for the Qingdao International Regatta, otherwise known as the Olympic test event. This represents the first opportunity for most Olympic sailors to race on the waters and experience the venue to be used at the 2008 Olympic Games.
Perhaps the most exciting thing about this event will be how the venue behaves. There has been a great deal of conversation about the light winds off Qingdao and although a great event will not silence this debate, an extremely light wind in fog will effectively condemn the venue to another two years of solid slating. Currently the weather at the venue is light but not as light as expected with around a force three a little way offshore from the race area.
It is clear from the entry list many of the potential 2008 Olympians are keen to attend the event and get a feel for the venue. All the ISAF number one ranked sailors have entered with the exception of Ukrainians Maxim Oberemko and Olga Maslivets, ranked number one in the RS:X Men’s and women’s class respectively.
Although many of the toped ranked sailors are turning out for the event it is a slightly disappointing turnout overall this year. If the entry list (at the bottom of the page) is absolutely final there are only 311 entries this year compared to 358 two years out from Athens. In addition to the Star fleet the 470 and and the Laser all have big events coming up potential causing competitors to stay away. However, the 470 World Championships are in China and the Laser World Championships in Korea neither a particular stretch to get to from Qingdao. So were have the additional competitors gone?
Ben Ainslie is set to make his return to the Finn class after a long time away from the boat. Ainslie, who is spending the majority of his time as Dean Barker’s sparring partner at Emirates Team New Zealand in the build up to the 2007 America’s Cup, admits he has only sailed his Finn twice since he won the Finn Gold Cup in 2005. Following Ainslie’s absence from the Finn class so the top of the fleet has opened up with a number of different sailors medalling at the various big events so far this year.
Jonas Hoegh-Christensen took victory at the Finn Gold Cup by a small margin and is now also ranked number one in the World leaving him as the firm favourite for a victory in the event depending upon the form Ainslie shows. Also representing a threat is Ainslie’s British team mate Ed Wright. Wright has had a very impressive season so far and will surely want to take victory at the event to prove he is capable of winning irrespective of Ainslie’s presence. Finally Athens silver medallist, Spain’s Rafael Trujillo, has consistently taken top five results throughout the year and will be a threatening presence out on the water.
There will, no doubt, be a great deal of hope pinned on the newly crowned Laser Radial World Champion, Chinese sailor Lijia Xu (below.) A modest sailor and new to the Laser Radial, Xu is not stranger to winning, especially on home turf having won one of her two Optimist World Championship titles at the World Championship in Qingdao in 2001. Considered by many at the start of this year as a light wind specialist Xu could be a great threat at the venue she knows so well. Aside from Xu there are scores of potential victors in the Laser Radial class and it is clear the competitors are still all struggling to find consistent form.
Generally considered favourite to win a medal at the 2008 Olympics, American sailor Paige Railey has had, by her standards, a bad year. Although she took victories in both the ISAF World Sailing Games and Hyeres regatta she has matched these with some terrible scores. A string of poor results at the light wind European Championship in Riccione, Italy saw Railey finish a disappointing 18th overall but worse was to come. At the World Championship, while Xu was showing exactly what she was made of in a variety of conditions, Railey managed to incur three yellow flags from the on-the-water Jury leaving her disqualified from every race in the finals series and last overall in the gold fleet.
The British Laser Radial sailors come as something of a surprise as both Penny Clark and Andrea Brewster are entered to compete in the test event. This decision based on a poor result at the recent World Championship leaves World number three ranked Laura Baldwin at home. Although this may seem a surprising choice the RYA stated at the beginning of this year representatives for the Pre-Olympics would be based solely on results at the European Championship, where Clark and Brewster were top Brits.
In comparison to the Laser Radial class, the Laser fleet is not nearly as uncertain. There are still a number of on form sailors in the fleet but the likelihood is one of five sailors will walk away with a Gold Medal. Britain’s Paul Goodison has been the man to beat since Robert Scheidt left the class. Although not nearly as dominant as Schiedt, Goodison has certainly been on form in the last couple of months coming away from Kiel Week and the Laser European Championship with two first places. He has also been number one in the ISAF world rankings for a long time and is not showing much sign of giving this position up. However, hot on his heels is Australian sailor Tom Slingsby who has taken victory in three ISAF Grade 1 events this year - Hyeres, Spa and the ISAF World Sailing Games. Aside from these two Gustavo Lima (POR), Maciej Grabowski (POL) and Andreas Geritzer could all take home a medal in the ultimate one-design fleet.
As well as the Laser, Britain will be hoping to put in a good showing in the 49er class with both World Champions, Chris Draper and Simon Hiscocks, and European Champions, Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes, entered in the event. It will not be easy for them, however, as current Gold Medallists, Iker Martinez and Xabier Fernandez, have returned to the class following their participation in the Volvo Ocean Race and will be looking for a top position after dropping out of the top three in the ISAF rankings following a disappointing tenth overall at the World Championships in Aix-les-Bains, France. The Italian Sibello brothers have also proved a consistent threat over the course of the season although they are certainly stronger in windy conditions leaving them with a potential struggle at this event. Also likely to put in a strong performance is long time 49er sailor and current Olympic silver medallist Rodion Luka and his crew George Leonchuk (UKR.) This fleet is not as wide open as some but the fight for gold is definitely on.
Returning to the 470 class after an extended absence are Nick Rogers and Joe Glanfield. Following their Silver Medal at Athens the pairing took some time away from 470 sailing and were all set to come back at the start of this year when disaster struck. While out riding his bike Rogers had a serious crash just a couple of days before their first event of the year, the Princess Sofia Trophy in Palma. The Olympic Test event is the first time they get back into the boat together and they will certainly be worth watching to see how much, if any, of their pace they have lost.
There are three favourites to win the event in the 470, Nathan Wilmot and Malcom Page (AUS) go into the Championship as current World Champions and must be feeling confident of a good result. Gideon Kliger and Udi Gal (ISR) have been a dominant force over the last year. Consistently at the top end of the fleet ,it would be a surprise if they finish outside of the top few. Long term 470 sailor Gabrio Zandona and crew Andrea Trani (ITA) currently lead the ranking and although they have only taken victory in one ISAF Grade 1 event this year they are very rarely outside the top five.
Christina Bassadone and Saskia Clark (GBR) will have a hard fight with Ingrid Petitjean and Nadege Douroux (FRA) as these two favourites battle it out for top spot on the leader board in the women’s 470. Sylvia Vogl and Carolina Flatscher (AUT) and Marcelien De Koning and Lobke Berkhout (NED) are also big threats in the fleet leaving this class very close to call.
In the Tornado fleet Darren Bundock and Glen Ashby (AUS) can always be relied on to sail a consistently good series and look like they will represent a big challenge out on the water. They face stiff competition in the form of Athens Gold Medallists, Roman Hagara and Hans Peter Steinacher (AUT,) who have a habit of hitting their form exactly when it is needed and have already taken victory at the European Championships this season. A pairing who will be hoping to prove they have not lost their edge will be 2005 ISAF Rolex World Sailors of the Year Fernando Echavarri and Anton Paz (ESP) who have had a poor season this year not even making the top ten at the European Championship.
The Yngling is once again likely to churn out some close fought racing. Newly crowned World Champions, Monica Azon, Sandra Azon and Graciela Pisonero (ESP,) will be out to maintain their dominant form. Sally Barkow, Carrie Howe and Debbie Capozzi (USA) will be looking to claim back their control of the fleet with a victory at the test event which will make up for a couple of slight wobbles this year. Gold Medalists, Sarah Ayton and Sarah Webb, will be in China with another new crew, 2004 Olympic 470 representative Katherine Hopson. The new team will be hoping to show they can take decent results even with little time out on the water.
In the newly introduced RS:X windsurfer Nick Dempsey looks like the man to beat. Victory at the Rolex Miami OCR, the Princess Sophia Trophy, SPA regatta and the European Championship, combined with a second place at Hyeres means it is Dempsey’s event to lose at the moment. His closest competition is likely to come from Athens gold medallist Gal Fridman. The Israeli has only made two appearances at ISAF Graded events on the new RS:X board, and none at an ISAF Grade 1 regatta but continues to be a force to be reckoned with. Many of the RS:X sailors still seem to be struggling to find their feet on the new Olympic equipment leaving a number of competitors with erratic results.
In addition to the challenge presented by Xu in the Laser Radial there is a strong home challenge from the Chinese in the women’s RS:X class. There are a number of Chinese sailors doing well in the class but principally Qiubin Chen looks to be the biggest hope for a medal, but it will not be easy for the Chinese sailor by any means in this hotly contested class. Britain’s Bryony Shaw had an impressive start to the season, winning both the Princess Sofia Regatta and the Rolex Miami OCR but has since lost her way a little failing to finish on the podium in any further events. The interestingly named Frey Frey (GRE) has been steadily improving on the new equipment managing to stay in the top ten in all events this year and taking second place at the European Championship.
One class looking decidedly thin on the ground for the test event is the Star. This is almost certainly due to the expense of getting boats from Europe and US to the venue so far in advance of the Games themselves as well as the proximity to last week’s Europeans and the Worlds in San Francisco at the end of September. Despite only eight boats being entered competition still should be good. Britain is represented of course by Iain Percy and Steve Mitchell who’s credentials are strong with a win in last year’s Europeans and a third at the Worlds. However through Percy’s Cup commitments they have spent considerably less time on the water this year posting a lacklustre 16th at the only event they have sailed this year - Rolex Miami OCR. They will be up against Andy Horton and Brad Nichol fresh from their third place at the Europeans, world no.1 George Szabo and Eric Monroe, while former Cup helm and Star veteran Iain Murray and crew Andrew Palfrey can never be discounted. But where are Loof, Rohart, Kusznierewicz, Scheidt, Mendelblatt, Pepper, etc?
Sailing is the only sport to hold two effective Pre-Olympic Championships the first of which is totally unique as it allows more than one person from each country to compete. This in effect makes the event technically more difficult to win than the Olympics itself, although it could be argued the sailors do not have the same drive at this stage in the Olympic cycle and have yet to peak. The test event promises not only to give us a glimpse of what the Olympics will be like in 2008 but also a chance to see the best sailors in the world competing against one another for victory in one of the toughest competitions going.
