Hagara and Steinacher step away

An update from the action at Travemunde Week

Roman Hagara and Hans Peter Steinacher from Austria are still the top scorer in the Tornado European Championship at the 117th Travemünde Week. On Monday (July 24) they set a third place and another bullet. After four out of ten races scheduled the two-times Olympic gold medallists extended their overall lead to 16 points, followed by the French team Xavier Revil/Christophe Espagnon. On the opening day of the 470 Junior World Championships two of the first victories in three groups went to Israel.
Levine Eyal/Amir Yam and Avin Ben Horin/Eran Sela scored a first as Luke Patience and Twiggy Grube from Great Britain did.

“It all fitted perfectly, we have a good run”, said Hagara in very few words after his superior appearance. The 40 year old catamaran sailor refused to talk about a predicted addition to his two European titles. “The victory is still far away”, he said. In the third race, showing very difficult and shifty conditions, they became third, only to score another victory in the second race of the day after two bullets the day before. “We love a steadybreeze, the opportunity to make mistakes is rare then”, the helmsmen commented on his third hit. “But we also have to deal with difficult conditions in sailing”.

The German teams could not improve better than the day before in the third race but showed a positive tendency in the fourth run. Johannes Polgar and Florian Spalteholtz, Fourth at the 2005 Worlds, climb to ninth place at the end of the day. But seven-times European Champion Roland Gaebler with crew Gunnar Struckmann had to accept an 20th overall. They were complaining: “The wind had been too often falling below the class’ limit of six knots.” But as the sea breeze settled in even Roland Gaebler/Gunnar Struckmann speeded up and scored a tenth place. “We did not find the right tactical strategy”, the 41 year old bronze medal winner (Sydney) said annoyed. The first day of the Junior World Championship in the Olympic 470 class had the same problems with variable and shifty winds.

“The gradient fights against the thermal sea breeze”, explained meteorologist Meeno Schrader from Kiel. “We started the first race early, but the wind broke down several times”, reported race officer Brian Schweder. Despite these problems, the 121 junior crews managed to end one race in each of the three groups. Their competitors sailed race ten, when the Danish crew Jesper Broendum, Jesper Holst and Martin Friedrichsen already enjoyed relaxation onshore. The 18-footer crew won the Columbia German Grand Prix early and did not have to start in the last race. The winning trio received a nice extra price and can continue their relaxation program now on a five day holiday in the Columbia Hotel in Cyprus.
