Sach brothers win

The German siblings have won the F18 World Championship

Leading after six qualifying races, Jean-Christophe Mourniac and Franck Citeau did not manage to take the F18 World Championship win on Friday in the finals. They finished fourth overall, the first French pair at the event which came to a close yesterday, Saturday, evening in Hyères. The Sach brothers (GER) won and the Australian Nissan Hobie Cat Pro Team with Darren Bundock and Glenn Ashby took second overall.

There was almost no wind to speak of throughout the event. This week, the 152 competitors played with a fickle breeze which did not exceed ten knots. Of the 18 nations represented, Germany finally came away with the world title, the Sach brothers sailing their way through a brilliant final.

Of the three teams of the Nissan Hobie Cat Pro Team, the Australians put in the most consistent performance throughout the championship. Fourth in qualifying, they did brilliantly well in the final with one win and two third places. They came very close to taking the title but finished second confirming their ease in the Hobie Tiger category this year. "We really are very pleased with our last day. We made some fantastic starts and I think that we sailed really well. It was a difficult championship with little wind but it worked well for us today," explained Bundock. Next Saturday, Bundock and Ashby will be competing in the European Tornado Championship in Germany.

In the six qualifying races run the French team of Jean-Christophe Mourniac and Philippe Mourniac came first once and never finished lower than fifth leaving them looking good for the finals. However, it seems they had used up all their luck having an awefull day on Friday.

For the Spanish Tornado sailors Fernando Echavarri and Antón Paz, this world championship got off to a great start from day one. But logically, the best places in the final are likely to be taken by the F18 specialists who have been racing the boat for a number of years now. Fernando and Antón are ranked number one in the world in the Tornado class, but they still need to clock up more time on the Hobie Tiger to represent a real threat. "On the first day, in steady winds, we had good speed and won a race. The wind did not exceed ten knots and our lack of experience on Tigers was evident. The championship was good for us as it was for the whole Nissan team. We still need to put in more work to be able to compete with the top players," explained Fernando.
