Richardson and Johnson win

Conditions for the final two races of PoW Week looked very benign but there was a sting in the tail of the race officer's briefing - 'possible 25 knot gusts under rain showers'. He wasn't wrong. The wind hit as the fleet bore away round the windward mark. There were lots of capsizes down the first run including a spectacular cartwheel by race leader Alister Richardson and Dan Johnson.
First to the leeward mark were Andrew Penman and Archie Massey followed by Mike Lennon and John McKenna. Lennon passed Penman up the next beat but then suffered a trapeze wire breakage returning the lead to Penman with Geoff Carveth and Adrian Murphy second. This continued until the leaders took the wrong route to the downwind finish handing a late victory to Richardson.
With Lennon a long way back Richardson had won the week. Several boats still had a chance at third - Penman, Carveth, Andy and Tom Partington, Jarrod Simpson and Tim Paul, Julian Pearson and Louise Hickey and Charlie Tavner and Ed Clay. The final race was won by Richardson with Lennon second and Carveth third. There was then a close fight between Partington, Penman, Simpson and Tavner. Partington took four and Penman fifth giving Carveth third for the week by one point from Penman.
The 14 class enjoyed a fabulous week at Mounts Bay which has a special combination of excellent sailing water, friendly club and good race management.
