A win for Junior

It was father versus son on Sydney Harbour when the Australian 18 Footers League staged the Syd Barnett Jnr. Memorial Trophy on Sunday.
One of the fleet veterans John Winning, a former world 18ft Skiff champion, had to be content this time with a second placing when his son John Winning Jnr. brought Appliances Online home a clear winner.
Appliances Online led for almost the entire race to win by 31secs from John Winning's Ssangyong Yandoo while Asko Appliances (Hugh Stodart) finished a further 1min 52secs back in third place.
Minor placings went to Belle Property (Micah Lane) fourth, then NSW and Australian champion Casio Seapathfinder (Michael Coxon) and Toshiba (Clynton Wade Lehman) sixth.
The fleet was sent over the windward-leeward course in a typically gusty westerly wind.
On this course the fleet sails four times around the buoys and from a handicap start the early leaders were Appliances Online, SX Projects and Southern Cross Constructions.
Southern Cross capsized at the leeward mark leaving Appliances Online and SX to maintain the lead over the second lap of the course.
Among the backmarkers Ssangyong Yandoo was rapidly moving through the fleet and looked the most likely to challenge for victory as they sailed the third windward leg of the course.
Appliances Online led easily on the third spinnaker run while Ssangyong Yandoo was leading the chase ahead of Asko Appliances and Belle Property.
The wind died almost completely as the leaders approached the final windward mark but there was never any doubt about Appliance Online's victory.
