Frederico Melo, from Portugal, and Blair McLay, from New Zealand, had another excellent day of regattas and remained side by side in first place at the Laser Radial Youth World. Both won the two races of their fleets and finished the second day of the championship, each with a four point loss. Brazilian sailor, André Ribeiro, from Ceará, was the best between his male compatriots. He got 15th place at the general qualification. Although brazilian Daniel Jakobsson wasn´t classified at the first race of the day, getting only the 23rd place, he still has chances to get the first positions, because his worst result can be discarded tomorrow. New Zealander Cushla Hume-Merry still is the woman in the best position, in 38th place.
According to Frederico, the stonger the wind, the better his race. “I repeated the excellent performance of yesterday because the wind, helped me a lot. With these conditions and since I am fast, I can get to the right side of the course quickly even when I don´t start well” he says proudly. Blair Mclay, his closest rival, has only one goal for the imediate future: “I want to keep my first place until the end”.
New Zealander Cushla Hume Merry is staying stong in the leadership race between women, in 38th place. “I think I´m sailing very well and I hope to keep the best position between female athletes," she says. Brazilian Fernanda Decnop climbed two places and is the leader of female sailors from her country. “I did better than yesterday and my wish is to carry on with this good fulfilment between women,” she explained.
On Wednesday there are two more races scheduled, from 12 p.m., which will finish the qualifying phase. From Thursday, the athletes will be divided in gold fleet and silver fleet. Gold fleet athletes will compete for the first 50 places. For the silver fleet, the battle will be for the following positions. The competition goes on until Saturday, between athletes from 26 countries. The Radial Youth reunites youngsters until the age of 18. They are considered the next generation of laser class.
