Six medals for Team GBR

Princesa Sofia draws to a close with a couple of stand-out performances and a good result for the young British sailors

Saturday March 26th 2005, Author: Event Press, Location: Mediterranean
Iván Pastor is the absolute winner of the 36 Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofía – Madrid 2012. The Spanish Olympic sailor, winner in the Mistral breaks the spell of the Northern Europe champions over the past editions.

He had no rival and he finished with only 10 points in 11 races (including the discards) and only Francisco Manchón could follow him and finished second. Ukranian Maxim Oberemko was third.

Spanish victory also in the Europe, with venue in Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa. Jesús Rogel took advantage of the Sebastián Östling’s (SWE) DSQ in the first race and was the winner in the class. Second place was for Östling followed in third place by Portuguese sailor Hugo Verissimo.

Natalia Via-Dufresne/Laia Tutzó did not have a chance in the 470 W and finished second overall. Winners are Austrian sailors Sylvia Vogl/Carolina Flatscher and third place is for British team Christina Bassadone/Saskia Clark.

With 26 points, British team Nic Asher/Elliot Willis were the winners in the 470 M, with second and third place for French teams Pallu De La Barriere/Chappellier Aymeric and Dreano/Floch.

In the 49er the victory was for Polish team Marcin Czaykowski/Krzysztof Kierkowsky followed by Spanish sailors Padrón/de la Plaza and third place was for Danish team Peter Hansen/Soren Hansen.

Australian sailors Darren Bundock/Aaron Worrall had no problem to become the winners in the Tornado. Bundock/Worrall won 6 of the 12 races sailed gaining a big distance over the second classified team Roland Gaebler/Gunnar Struckmann (GER). Third place was finally for British sailors Leigh Mc Millan/Will Howden.

No racing in the Finn today and therefore, victory for Emilios Papathanassiou (GRE) followed by Gaspar Vincec (SLO) and Jonas Hoegh-Christiensen (DEN). Rafael Trujillo finished sixth overall.

Portuguese sailor Gustavo Lima was the clear winner in the Laser winning 8 of the 14 races sailed. Lima was at one step of being the absolute winner of the 36 Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofía – Madrid 2012, but Iván Pastor won the Trophy thanks its regular performance. Second place was for British sailor Paul Goodison and third place for Mark Howard.

US sailor Paige Railey (above) proved she is the best in the Laser Radial. Railey's strong performance was consistent throughout the five-day regatta, taking the lead on the first day and never relinquishing that top spot. Out of a total of 13 races, Railey won a total of six races. Overall, Railey had a total of 33 points and finished 32 points ahead of runner-up Charlotte Dobson (GBR), who inched ahead of third place finisher Wiebke Schroder (GER) earlier in the week.

Next up for Paige Railey is a trip back home to St. Petersburg, Fla., to complete her senior year in high school. She has a busy sailing schedule ahead of her this summer, including a trip to the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship in Busan, Korea to represent the USA as part of US Sailings's US Youth World Team.

Danish team Lars Hendriksen/Peter Johansen/Martin Leifeldt on board BB-King were the winners in the Dragon. Second place was for Russian boat My Best with crew members Vadim Slatsenko/Andry Litsynskyy/Petr Zaharov and third place for German sailors Markus Wieser/Erck Rickmers/Thomas Arracher.

French sailors Anne Le Helley/Marion Deplanque/Catherine Lepesant were the winners in the Yngling followed by Spanish team Monica Azón/Graciela Pisonero/Sandra Azón. Third place was for team Ekaterina Skoudina/Diana Krutskikh/Tatiana Larsteva.

Great Britain won a gold medal in the 470 men’s class, silver in the Laser Standard and Radial and bronze medals in the 470 women, Laser and Tornado. RYA Olympic Manager Stephen Park commented on the overall results: “A successful start to the 2005 season for Team GBR, particularly for the Development Squad sailors, many of whom were competing for the first time at senior level. Our coaches will go home happy that their charges are making progress against goals, while some of the sailors will be pleasantly surprised that they exceeded their personal goals. I was particularly pleased to see three GBR women finish in the top 10 in the Laser Radial as this new class enters the Olympic arena.”
