RS Elites do battle at HISC

Wednesday July 20th 2005, Author: Class Association, Location: United Kingdom
The first RS Elite Nationals were held at Hayling Island Sailing Club over the weekend 16th and 17th July. This was an exciting event for HISC members who were involved in the design, developement and building of this elegant new keelboat, 13 of which are now based in Hayling.

Five races were sailed in ideal conditions in Hayling Bay, glorious sunshine, warm sea, and a perfect 10-15 knot sea breeze. 16 Elites came to the line for the first race run by Senior Race Office Stuart Popham, HISC Trustee and long term resident on the Island.

Enthusiasum overcame the fleet with most over the line necessitating a general recall. After a better start, Mike Dawe from Northney and his Hayling team won both the two races on the Saturday hotly pursued by Elite No 9 the LDC demo boat sailed by Buzz Keck who had two seconds.

Andy Jameson sailing the 'Hayling Boat' No3 owned by four well know Hayling residents (Messers Danby, Pickup, Atkin, Bishop) sailed well to take a 3rd and 4th, inspite of having the older type sail plan.  Racing throughout was tight, the standard has improved significantly in the 12 months since the first Elite was launched, good starts and a perfect starboard approach to the windward mark being esential.

On Sunday the sea breeze was slightly less strong but the weather just as glorious and the three races all produced different winners.Race 1 was won by the LDC boat, Race 2 by the Nick Peters team including Hayling residents Bev Moss and Tracey Jacobs in the newest boat No 30 and Race 3 by the 'Captains Boat' No 1 helmed by Mike Tong local Class captain and Crewed by Peter Wareham UK Class Captain and Dan Mountifield.

Overal the event was a great success with our long distance visitor from Scotland Shaun Maclean enjoying the Southern Weather plus the hospitality and dinner at HISC.

The Hayling Solos also had a great open meeting with 39 racing including 20+ visitors. And they provided a great tea afterwards!
