Keeping busy

No racing at the Fireball National and European Championships

Friday August 12th 2005, Author: Jonathan Bale, Location: United Kingdom
At the morning briefing Race Officer Mike Pearson announced that he would be putting up a two hour postponement. It was hoped that this would be sufficient time for a sea breeze to fill in. However the sea breeze failed to materialise.

So it was to the crazy golf that the fleet directed their efforts. Final scores were as follows:

1st Adam Broughton 7 holes
2ndAndy Pearce 5 holes
3rd Olly Goldsmith 4 holes
4th Chris Gill 2 holes

After the golf it was decided that the most traditional of British pastimes should be undertaken, no not Morris Dancing but Cricket. A special set of rules had to be adopted, anyone hitting the ball over the boundary in one go was automatically scored out on the grounds that they were too good. The record does not show who won only that the Aussies lost.

With still no sign of the wind arriving racing was eventually abandoned for the day.

The nights evening entertainment was courtesy of the Swiss, with a presentation from them about the venue for the 2007 World Championships, which is scheduled to be held on Lake Silvaplana. Everyone was treated to more free beer and some very tasty Swiss chocolate. Despite there being no racing, a daily prize giving was still held as there were many prizes for the Silver and Bronze fleet to be drawn out of the hat. The prizes for the Silver fleet have been kindly donated by Speed Sails, whilst those for the Bronze fleet were courtesy of Typhoon.

Going into the final day it is all very close at the top of the leader board. With more light winds forecast, the prospect of getting two races in is looking slim. Two further races are needed before a discard is applied. It could be a long nervous wait for some people.
