Archipelago Raid grows

Tougher, longer course with more competitors for dinghy cat race through the Swedish and Finnish islands

The largest and most extreme orienteering sailing competition in the world, the Archipelago Raid, will this year be even harder than on the four previous occasions it has been held. With one more day added to the race, the competitors will navigate in the Archipelagos of Stockholm, Åland and Finland now over the course of six days. Like the previous races, two man teams will race the course in Formula 18 catamarans. Paddling is allowed, allowing no time to rest, even in very light wind conditions.

The course will be longer and go more east than ever to Nagu in the Finnish archipelago. Around 600 nautical miles will be sailed during these gruelling six days and nights.

Already last year the level of the competitors was high, with pro sailors from all over the world fighting for top position. Many of last year’s stars are back, both local and foreigners, and a total of 35 teams are expected this year.

The start of the Archipelago Raid is on 15 August in the heart of Stockholm. The finish is on August 20, in the famous sailing harbour of Sandhamn, in the Stockholm archipelago well known as being the host port of the annual Gotland Runt.

General information

The race area for the Archipelago Raid are the archipelagos of Stockholm, Åland and Finnish comprising around 100 000 islands.

Over the duration of the course teams will have to navigate while sailing to locate 35 check points set up on beaches or pontoons throughout the archipelagos.
