Only one 'grand finale'

The 116th Travemuende Week saw the Contender Worlds starting yesterday with the first three races finally getting underway. The Contenders were due to start on Monday but unstable winds made racing impossible.

Jan von der Bank of Kiel (GER) is leading a very strong 106 boat fleet, but is being closely followed by two Brits, Graham Scott and Tim Holden. The Defending world champion Andrea Bonezzi (ITA) is currently in fourth place overall.“I had a nice pin end start in the first race and it was pretty much clear that this end would have an advantage”, explained von der Bank who had led the fleet from start to finish in race one. Marcus Hamilton (AUS) who is favorite to win the event had a very poor start to the event coming 27th but redeemed himself by scoring a first and a second in the following races. “If the wind stays light there is a good chance to beat them. But in stable conditions the Worlds will be a match race between Andrea and Marcus”, predicted the early leader.

The First ‘grand final’ races were scheduled for yesterday but only the 49er fleet was able to get on the water in the variable breeze. First place went to Thomas Rein and Patrick Boehmer (GER) who were closely followed by Martin and Oliver Lewin (GER). Former Australian Olympic windsurfing champion Christoph Sieber and his crew Clemens Kruse finished in third place.

As the 29er and Tornado fleets were unable to get out on the water for their final races their final results will remain the same as they were at the end of yesterday.

505 World champions Wolfgang Hunger and Holger Jess (GER) have won the international 505 German Championships. They were disqualified after a collision with the path finder at the gate start. This did not matter in the end as Lehmann and Scholer were unable to take the first place they would need to win the regatta in the last race. Bronze went Howie Hamlin and Lewis (USA).
