Ferris takes lead
Thursday July 21st 2005, Author: Jodie Perkins / TheDailySail, Location: United Kingdom
The Yngling World Championships being held in Mondsee, Austria are now over the halfway stage and there has been a change in leader in the Womens fleet. The New Zealand team of Sharon Ferris, Raynor Smeal and Ashley Holtum have recorded two race wins and hold a narrow two point lead over Sally Barkow, Carrie Howe and Debbie Capozzi of the USA.
With five races now complete one discard is being taken into account, for Ferris this is a sixteenth in race three, which is important as only one score is to be discarded at the end of the regatta.
Race six was hampered by protests which meant a confused wait for all the competitors. “There are a lot of protests from race six. Against the race committee and also different boats on boats we are just waiting to see what happens,” said Ferris. But results have been posted and their first place stands, shooting them from third into the lead.
Britons; Sarah Ayton, Anne Lush and Lisa MacDonald have been steadily moving up the rankings but still have a long way to go if they want to convert their fourth place into a podium position. Ayton is using her discard on their first race 23rd whereas the Germans in third discard a 14th and sit seven points ahead. There is more pressure for the Brits from behind with the Australians just one point adrift.
Light and inconsistent breeze has set the scene for racing so far at the Yngling World Champs. With the top places all staying fairly inconsistant the key to this event looks like it will be staying inside the top ten and being as consistant as possible.
Thursday is a spare day, racing continues on Friday and Saturday.
