50th anniversary Worlds

US competitor Jesse Falsone previews this week's CSC 2005 International 505 World Championship in Warnemunde

The International 505 Class celebrate their 50th World Championship from 17-26 August in Warnemünde, Germany. 175 teams have registered (see below), making this the largest 505 worlds since previous record world championship of 157 in Quiberon, France in 1999. Germany is home to the largest 505 fleet in the world, boasting over 300 members, many of whom will be racing in the championship. 12 nations will be represented including Australia, Denmark, Finland, France, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Poland, South Africa, Switzerland, Sweeden, and the United States.

The German organising authority, Warnemünder Segel-Club and the German 505 National Association have gone to considerable lengths to make this a memorable and historic event. Among the many social events planned, the Grand 505 Ball, now known as the HSH Nordbank Night after its sponsor, will be the single largest gathering of past 505 world champions in history. German two-time 505 world champion Holger Jess has been instrumental in enabling this gathering by pursuading many past champions to attend. "We were determined to make this event the biggest and best world championship and to organise a fitting tribute to the 50-year history of the 505", says Jess.

There are many contenders, as can be expected in such a huge fleet and most countries have representatives with impressive credentials. Here's a partial list of these competitors:

Jørgen and Jacob Bojsen-Møller (DEN) - FD World Champion, Olympic Gold and Bronze Medalist
Philippe Boite & Frabice Toupet - (FRA) - Perennial top 10 finisher at 505 Worlds
Ian Pinnell & Steve Hunt (GBR) - Perennial top 10 finishers at 505 Worlds, Pinnell is a past Fireball world champion
Ebbe Rosen & Olle Wenrup (SWE) - Top 10 finisher at 505 Worlds, Wenrup won a 505 world championship with Bergstrom in 1987
Howard Hamlin & Cam Lewis (USA) - past 505 world champions, Hamlin is also an 18ft Skiff JJ Giltinan Torphy winner, and Lewis has world titles in the Finn.
Mike Martin (USA) - is a past 505 and 18ft skiff world champion
Ethan Bixby (USA) - past 505 world champion
Wolfgang Hunger and Holger Jess (GER) - past 505 world champions, Hunger is also a past 470 world champion and Olympian

Noticeably absent from competition is the most successful 505 sailor in history, Krister Bergstrom, who cannot attend due to professional commitments.

Given the size of the fleet, most people would assume the class will divide the field, and race in a round-robin format. However the 505 class is accustomed to large fleets and through the use of gate starts and long courses, all 175 boats can be accommodated. Furthermore, the relative speed differences between boats will have the effect of spreading the fleet out after the first leg

Despite being surpassed by skiffs in sheer performance, the 505 remains the quintessential high-performance dinghy despite reaching the half-century mark. In 2002, the class ushered in a new era with the introduction of a larger spinnaker that revolutionised the downwind performance of the boat. Technical enhancements continue in the class, with recent developments primarily revolving around foils and rigging.

Builders such as Van Munster (Aus), Ovington (UK), and now Pegasus Racing (US) have developed increasingly tight tolerances with their moulds (some boats measure to within 0.5mm of the measuring templates) and are using pre-preg carbon fibre laminates to increase stiffness and reduce weight. The class has been hesitant thus far to embrace carbon spars, rather choosing to rely on the relative abundance and reasonable cost of aluminum. Regardless, 505 sailors realise that no technical silver bullet exists in the class, and that ultimately, winners are decided by how well they know their gear, and execute on race course.

Racing starts today (Wednesday) with the first two of four Pre-Worlds races to be held over the next two days. The World Champion itself starts on Saturday (20 August) and runs for seven days with a layday on Tuesday.
