A tale of two breezes

Conditions remain 'consistant' at the Expert Olympic Garda regatta

Another long day for the almost 300 crews competing at the Expert Olympic Garda 2004. This Italian event of the racing circuit is reserved to the Olympic classes, and is organised by the Italian Sailing Federation in collaboration with the Fraglia Vela Riva and the Fraglia Vela Malcesine.

Racing started at 8.30 am in the strong northerly breeze known locally as the “Peler”. After the "Peler" died around midday, all the crews returned to shore for lunch break. They were sent back on the water with the southerly afternoon breeze knows as “Ora” and returned to shore around 6 pm. The "Ora" in the past few days has been lighter than usual. With the two different breezes, the competitors are getting to see very different conditions.

British interest lies in the Laser class with Hugh Styles and Keir Clarke. Styles, the former Tornado sailor has put together a 3,6,4,8 over the last two days to move him up to 16th position. The young Keir Clarke, who last year won the Laser Radial class at the RYA Youth Championships is in 30th spot in the 62 boat fleet.

Racing concludes on Saturday.
