VIDEO: C-Class catamarans in action

Check out why C-Class catamarans are special boats in this unique video footage

Monday September 20th 2004, Author: James Boyd, Location: United States

The following images were shot prior to the start of racing at the C-Class Catamaran Championship in Bristol, Rhode Island last week and show Steve Clark and Duncan MacLane's solid wingsail defender Cogito sailing at speed in apparently no wind (check out the state of the water). This is the only video footage we have ever seen of C-Class catamarans sailing.

Clip 1 - around the boatyard: Patient Lady VI's wing is stepped, a look at the Invictus Challenge wing and its innards, images of Cogito's single slot wing rig and the unusual sight of Patient Lady's wing gliding through a windless Bristol harbour:

Clip 2 - Cogito sailing in next to no breeze, yet still able to fly a hull with the aid of Steve Clark to leeward; suddenly the wind builds to around 8 knots allowing Clark to trapeze to weather and still fly a hull.

Clip 3 - Cogito at pace. Steve Clark demonstrates various positions the crew on a C-Class can maintain. There are also some images of Patient Lady VI in the background, but this was on one of her crew's first sails on her and they are showing a little less confidence or maybe just plain boat speed compared to MacLane and Clark.

About video on thedailysail.com

Firstly due to the file sizes involved, this is deliberately aimed at those readers with broadband access or considerable patience. Video we publish can be watched on PCs in Windows Media Player (.wmv file format) or on Macs using Quicktime (.mov file format). Quicktime movies can also be watched on a PC if Quicktime is installed (it can be downloaded here). Both programs thankfully allow the video to be viewed as it is downloaded. We apologise to users who find this video too big/small but this technology is still in its infancy and we are awaiting better solutions. Any suggestions? Please click here.
