Funsch and Lurie victory

Mastering a mix of conditions and challenging tides on the Great Beds at the mouth of the Raritan and Arthur Kills Rivers, Mike Funsch and crew Jay Lurie 2004 InterClub Class and Vanguard 15 Champions won the 2004 U.S. Champion of Champions for the Jack Brown Trophy. The Championship of Champions was hosted by Raritan Yacht Club, Perth Amboy, NJ and sponsored by Rolex Watch U.S.A., Dry Creek Vineyard and numerous local companies.
Multiple National Champion, Glenn Darden and crew Wulf Focke captured second with only one finish (discarded) out of the top ten. Brent Barbehenn and crew Ben Stock from the Jet 14 Class came on strong winning one race and placing third in two others to climb to third overall. Early leader and Championship of Champions defending champion (then representing the Lightning Class) Allen Terhune, Jr. and crew Katie Terhune slipped to fourth overall with a couple of bottom half finishes on the day.
Vince Morvillo, representing the Ensign Class and Challenged sailors everywhere, is blind and together with crew Kent Gordon, inspired all who met him this week. Seven teams were made up of family combinations such as father-son, father-daughter, and a pair of brothers.
