Niners at Queen Mary
Wednesday September 29th 2004, Author: Ovington Boats, Location: United Kingdom
Queen Mary SC hosted the open over the weekend of the 25/26 September. Saturday brought light winds and drizzle making for interesting tactical racing but not very exiting to do or watch. Sundays racing was delayed for an hour while waiting for wind. Eventually the wind came, building through the day to make the last race of the day fast and furious.
In the 29er fleet is was the old hands fresh back from their success at the worlds that made their mark by finishing 1st and 2nd. It was a tough battle between Dylan Fletcher/Nick Hollis and Ed Chapman/Tom Peel with the Chapman/Peel team just doing enough to win overall. They didn't get it all there own way and with some of the new blood getting to grips with the boat we will see some new names such as Huw Humphrey's/Max Todd who came in 3rd soon pushing for that international success.
The 49er fleet was shown a clean pair of heels by the new pairing of Graham Vials/ Mark Asquith, they won all three races on Saturday and the first on Sunday. The young team of Richard Bone/ Chris Rodway won the last two races enjoying the slightly better wind conditions.
The 2004 59er Championship was held along side the 9er open at Queen Mary Sailing club.
While Dave Hall & Adam Clark from Thorpe Bay SC won every race the really interesting racing and place changes took place in the fight for 2nd and 3rd. Rob Dulson/ Christine Irendale just taking the runner up spot from John Bennett and his son.
