Race leader yellow flagged

“It was puffy, shifty,…a patient man’s day”, Richard Clarke who finished second in race six today, summarised the conditions for the Finn Europeans off La Rochelle.
Starting with 15 knots, the wind was going all over the place. Boats at each end of the
line were sailing on different tacks. “It was hard to know who was leading on the first
beat,” explained Guillaume Florent.
First at the top mark, Nenad Viali from Croatia enjoyed 'half an hour of glory' before dropping to fourth position at the end of the reach. He was followed by Soren Holm, Rafael Trujillo, Richard Clarke, Andrew Simpson, Zhang Xiangfeng and Dean Barker. Holm, who had lost some ground on the reaches took first place at the end of the second beat in front of Richard Clarke and Andrew Simpson. The wind by then had dropped to 10 knots and the Racing Committee changed the Oscar flag allowing free pumping downwind to Romeo, reverting to the usual RRs 42. This caused the jury to leap into action penalising four sailors including Ben Ainslie and Mateusz Kusznierewicz for the second time, forcing the regatta leader to retire from the race.
“This is so stupid, I saw the C flag for the change of course at the top mark but I didn’t see the R flag. I was so concentrated on the shifts and Sebastien just behind me. It is a real pity, I was coming 8th and this will make it harder to win the regatta.” declared a disappointed Kusznierewicz.
Former illbruck crewman Richard Clarke led the fleet around the last leeward mark with Andrew Simpson just behind. The last beat proved tricky. Simpson took the option to go right while Clarke sailed more conservatively in the center. More pressure on the right lifted Andrew Simpson to the finish. Clarke was second in front of Soren Holm in third and Rafael Trujillo in fourth. Ainslie finished 15th.
If yesterday was 'Kiwi day', today was declared 'Croatian day' with Nenad Viali, Karlo Kuret and Marin Misura taking 5th, 6th and 7th places. The first Junior was Wietze
Zetzema (NED) in 40th place.
After six races (and one discard) Kusznierewicz still holds the lead 16 points clear of Ben Ainslie and 18 points ahead of Sebastien Godefroid.
The first Junior is Lei Gong from China in 43rd position. Tapio Nirkko is second junior in 45th place and Oleksyi Borisov 3rd in 49th.
In the battle for Olympic qualification, the top five nations are: Austria (Florent Raudaschl, 26th), Argentina (Alejandro Colla, 31st), Russia (Vladimir Krutskikh 32nd), Italy (Michele Marchesini, 33rd) and Hungary (Balazs Hajdu, 35th).
Three more races scheduled, two races for tomorrow, with a start at 1300 and there is still all to play for.
