Dragon Edinburgh Cup suffers from lack of wind and rain

It was a long day of frustration and discomfort for the International Dragon class, hoping to contest the first day of their South West Area Championships and the Edinburgh Cup on Sunday, with no races possible.

The fleet of 31 boats spent over six hours on a grey and listless Torbay, while the Royal Torbay Yacht Club's race officer, Graham Jenkins, tried time and again to lay a starting line and course.

From time to time the breeze would tease both the competitors and the race officer by appearing to fill in on different parts of the bay, but before marks could be laid, it would either disappear or shift radically and then disappear.

Intermittent drizzle added to the discomfort, and when heavy rain started falling late in the afternoon, Graham Jenkins sent the fleet ashore, and abandoned any further attempts to race.

The Royal Torbay Yacht Club will attempt to get the event back on schedule by sailing as many races as possible on Monday.
