Andreas Kling brings us up to date with the giant regatta in Travemuende

For the start of the German Match Racing Championship during the 114th Travemuende Week, wind god Aeolus was pretty confused. After dead calm followed a sea breeze and in the afternoon a thunderstorm ended racing. Nevertheless on all courses one or two races were completed.

The Hobie 14 Worlds managed to sail three races on course foxtrot. Frank Suchanek from Krefeld, Germany used the conditions best and took over the lead. Pepe Bettini and Frederico Villambrosa from Argentina sailed to the top of the list in the 29er Euro and Glenn Ashby demonstrated its dominance in the A-Cat class with seven firsts of eight races.

The world championship of the singlehanded Hobie 14 catamarans showed thrilling results after five races. The Dutch Thorin Zeilmaker had an OCS (over early start) and two firsts afterwards, but while no results have been discarded so far he is so far only 14th. In front Frank Suchanek and Joachim Wegener from Hamburg have tied points with Suchanek leading. 22 points behind follows Peter Manvis from the Netherlands is still tied with Jochen Sierck. "The conditions have been tactically difficult," said Suchanek. "That’s why the results change so much."

The only lately crowned vice world champion of the 29er class Bettini/Villambrosa showed everyone their stern in the two races of the day. The bronze winners of the Worlds, which have just finished in Laredo/Spain, Tom Smedley and Steve Wilson (Great Britain) followed in second place with the team from Finland, Lethinen/Pennanen third. The current World Champions Evans/Peacock from Great Britain lost their lead from the day before and dropped to fifth place in the fleet of 52 starters.

The European Championship of the single handed A-Cat construction class has been a complete domination by the current world champion Glenn Ashby. The Australian, who crewed for Darren Bundock in the Tornado at Kiel Week had his discard in the first race, but since then he has outclassed his competitors by scoring seven firsts in eight races. Fellow countrymen Scott Anderson came in second in most of the races and it looks as if he doesn’t have a chance to win. This continues Ashby’s dominance from last year when he won the North American, German, Australian, European and World Championships.

A straight walk into the next round of the German Match Racing Championship had Carsten Kemmling from Hamburg, Germany with his crew Peter Stein and Claas de Jong. The 23rd of the world ranking list won every duel in his group. The other two places had to be decided in a tie break, because Sven-Erik Horsch from Hamburg, Timo Ellegast (Konstanz) and Franziska Unkelbach, Kiel with an all female crew scored two wins each. "It was very thrilling," commented Andreas John (Hamburg) sailing with Horsch, "in the pre-start action, the tension is extremely high, while everyone wants to avoid mistakes”.

And Jan Hamester who qualified for the German Championship by becoming second in the streamline class in the first half of the Travemuende Week fleet races made too many mistakes and ended without a chance. Just before the thunderstorm covered the bay of Luebeck, local hero Alex Hagen lost one match to Stefan Meister from Berlin, after winning two matches. Meister currently leads group number two.
