Hamlin/Alarie move forward

Six races sailed in 505 World championships in Sweden

Wednesday July 30th 2003, Author: James Boyd, Location: Scandinavia
After a postponement of over four hours in the hot and sunny conditions while waiting for wind, a gentle northwesterly breeze settled for sufficient time for the 505 fleet to start the sixth race of the 505 World Championship.

Fortunately the current that dominated the racing on Monday was much reduced but the light breeze had variations in pressure and direction across the course. A left shift near the top of the first beat brought the Americans, Howard Hamlin and Peter Alarie, to the front, Hamlin obviously suffering no ill effects from gashing his head badly on the boom before the start.

The chasing pack were led by Patrick McCosh and Dennis Lapham of Zimabwe and Stefan Koeclin and Axel Preigan of Germany. The initial shift had caused the Race Committee to move the top mark for the second round but a further shift again strongly biased the beat to the left, which turned the next three legs into a procession with fewer overtaking opportunities than the average Formula 1 race.

Hamlin and Alarie held on to lead Koeclin and Priegan home, with Krister Bergstrom and Johann Barne of the host nation working through to third place. The Championship leaders, however, remain Hunger and Jess of Germany, who although finishing outside the top ten places still retain a commanding lead over their closest challengers, Bergstrom/Barne and Pinnell and Hunt of Great Britain.
