Sailor and Freelance Photographer, Luca Villata worked as Independent Producer and Cinematographer in London until 1991.
With a radical twist in his career, he moved to the Mediterranean, where he spent four years yacht racing. During this time, he successfully organized and managed to victory a 14 man sailing team.
Photography seemed a natural extension of Luca’s sailing experience, when in 1996 he was asked to Manage and Report on the activities of several sailing teams sponsored by the TNT Post Group.
This four year assignment involved concentrating mainly on athletes competing in the Italian Olympic Campaign.
The first magazine cover came with the shot of a spectacular and extremely dangerous nosedive of the two time 49er World Champion Chris Nicholson.
More covers followed with the public interest in Olympic class racing and in particular when Alessandra Sensini won the Gold medal for windsurfing in the Sydney 2000 Games.
In the four year run up to the Sydney 2000 games, more than 600 of Luca's photos appeared in news and features in the Italian press and international specialised magazines.
Luca is also the Producer of two short video clips on the sporting profiles of the top Italian Olympic Sailors, which have been broadcasted by the major national TV networks in the year 2000 and after.

NB: Luca comments - This photo collection from the JJ Giltinan Trophy shows a small sample of Luca's sailing photography. The original photos are on transparency and have been scanned, with a slight loss of brilliance and depth, details and colour rendering. The reproduction in digital format of “special effects” such as fine water sprays or sparkles, and “magic hour” colour shades or shadow details, is compromised too.
