Joyon goes code amber

Possible weather window for IDEC's solo New York-Lizard record attempt

Sunday June 9th 2013, Author: James Boyd, Location: United States

Francis Joyon has gone to code amber for his attempt on the elusive singlehanded west to east record across the North Atlantic from New York to the Lizard.

The skipper of the maxi-trimaran IDEC has flown to the USA as there is a potential weather window opening making a start for the record possible within the next 48 hours.

Joyon will be hoping to have more success on this record than his last go when in August 2011 he capsized soon after setting off.

If he does success in prising this record off Thomas Coville then Joyon will be the fastest solo sailor non-stop around the world, for the Toue of Discovery course from Cadiz to San Salvador as well as holding the 24 hour solo record.

To beat the record Joyon must average more than 21 knots average is he is to beat Thomas Coville's time of 5 days 19 hours and 29 minutes set aboard his sistership to IDEC, in 2008.
